About

A path to the law that started abroad.

Ameara Smith is an international relations student at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, where she is building toward law school and a career in gender justice and human rights.

Her introduction to the law came in Italy. She spent her eleventh-grade year in Viterbo with School Year Abroad and interned for nine months at Studio Legale Perugi & Celoni, observing case handling, assisting with filings, and learning the Italian legal system from the inside. She now speaks Italian at a professional working level.

Back in Pennsylvania, she interned under the Honorable Jodi Griffis of the Montgomery County District Court — sitting in on hearings, assisting with case filings, and traveling to meet clients. At the National Women's Law Center she spent ten months with the Education team, studying gender justice advocacy in education policy and completing a capstone project on menstrual equity that she presented to the Center's partners.

At Georgetown she works in the university libraries, guides campus tours with the Blue & Gray Tour Guide Society, and is part of Students of Georgetown, Inc. — the largest student-run nonprofit in the world.
